The Lodge

Nabaraku is a renovated traditional Japanese mountain lodge built from cedar wood, originally designed for life in the Japanese Alps. During the renovation, we focused on preserving the spirit and atmosphere of the original house — its materials, proportions, and sense of calm — while carefully improving comfort for contemporary stays.

The result is a place where traditional Japanese character meets thoughtful modern upgrades. While the overall feeling remains warm and natural, key elements such as bathrooms and facilities have been modernized to ensure comfort, privacy, and ease of use.

What to expect

  •  • Sleeps up to 12 guests — exclusive use of the entire lodge
  •  Five bedrooms, designed for privacy and quiet rest
  •  Suitable for families with children – the lodge is a shared mountain home with open spaces and traditional wooden architecture. Best suited for older children who are comfortable with stairs and enjoy calm, nature-based stays.
  •  Three toilets and two separate shower rooms — no waiting, even for groups
  •  A kitchen designed to be used (coffee machine, fridge, microwave, cookware)
  •  Shared living and dining space for long evenings together
  •  Drying room and storage for skis and outdoor gear
  •  Two 4WD vehicles included for exploring the valley
  •  Local host support when you need it — and space when you don’t
  •  Hakuba Station pick-up can be arranged on request

Everything is there to make shared days simple — and leave space for quiet moments.

Rooms & Sleeping Arrangements

The lodge offers five separate bedrooms, providing privacy while maintaining a shared, communal atmosphere.

  • • Four double bedrooms, ideal for couples or friends
  •  One family room - Shoshin, featuring a cozy sleeping loft accessed by a small staircase — a simple, intimate space especially loved by children

Each room is equipped with:

  • • storage space or hanging areas for clothing
  • • a calm, uncluttered layout
  •  Family room - Shoshin includes a television and a vanity table with mirror

Bathrooms & Facilities

To ensure comfort for groups, the lodge includes:

  • • two separate shower rooms, one of which also includes a toilet
  • • two additional standalone toilets, located on the upper floor

This layout allows guests to move easily through their daily routines without congestion, even when the lodge is fully occupied.

Kitchen & Dining

The fully equipped kitchen opens into a large dining area with a generous table, where all guests can sit together for shared meals. Whether preparing breakfast, cooking dinner, or enjoying a long evening at the table, the space encourages connection and unhurried time.

Shared Living Spaces

At the heart of Nabaraku is a spacious shared living area designed for gathering, resting, and spending time together.

The living room features:

  • • comfortable sofas and seating
  • • a television
  • • a record player for quiet music
  • • an electro-acoustic guitar, available for guests

This is a place for slow evenings, conversation, and unwinding after days spent outdoors.

Entrance, Drying Room & Storage

Upon entering the lodge, guests arrive in a spacious entrance hall designed for mountain life.

This area includes:

  • • a drying room for clothes and boots
  • • a dedicated ski and equipment storage area
  • • ample space to store and organize winter gear

Everything is arranged to make arrivals and returns from the mountains simple and comfortable.

Transportation & Getting Around

To make exploring Hakuba and the surrounding area easy and flexible, guests have access to two eight-seat 4×4 vehicles throughout their stay.

These vehicles are included as part of the lodge experience and are ideal for:

  • • getting to ski resorts and trailheads
  • • visiting local restaurants and onsens
  • • day trips around the Hakuba Valley

They allow groups to move independently and comfortably, even in winter conditions.

Local Support & Personal Guidance

Nabaraku is personally looked after by Viktor, who is also your main point of contact before and during your stay.

Viktor is available to:

  • • help with trip planning and logistics
  • • recommend ski resorts based on conditions and skill level
  • • suggest local restaurants, cafés, and onsens
  • • advise on day trips, hikes, and seasonal activities
  • • share practical insights about Hakuba and the Japanese Alps

Guests can choose their level of interaction — from hands-on guidance to quiet independence. Support is always available when needed, but never intrusive.

Living Like a Local

Rather than offering a fixed program or curated experiences, Nabaraku provides the space, tools, and local knowledge to help guests experience Hakuba naturally — at their own pace.

This balance of privacy, comfort, and personal support allows guests to feel less like visitors and more like temporary locals in the mountains.

Pick-up & Arrival Support

To make arrival as smooth as possible, pick-up and drop-off at Hakuba Station can be arranged.

Guests are welcomed in person and helped with their arrival, luggage, and initial orientation in the area. This service is one which will be especially appreciated after a long journey to the mountains.

Details are arranged individually before arrival.

A Place to Feel at Home

Nabaraku is not designed as a hotel, but as a shared mountain home. Its layout, materials, and atmosphere reflect a balance between tradition and comfort — offering guests space to slow down, feel grounded, and experience the Japanese Alps in a natural, unforced way.
